China, a country that sacrifices its environment and people to feed its ever-growing economic powerhouse is ready to do whatever it takes to get access to our natural resources. According to a survey by Transparency International, companies from China are seen as the most likely to use bribery to secure foreign contracts, a fact that undeniably underlines my curiosity over “massive” Chinese Investment in corrupt African Nations. They pose serious environmental threat wherever they stick their nose in and I can’t see an end to their brutal killings of our elephants and rhinos, just to mention a few.
One may defend the point of China’s investment in Africa’s infrastructure development but let us be practical here; the infrastructure Chinese are building in Africa is primarily to help Chinese companies produce electricity and have access to remote areas by constructing roads and railroads to extract and process natural resources – makes sense, right? Later when these Chinese leave, the roads go only from the mines to the ports and the dams are wired to supply the mines and refineries, not the whole country – duped, nah? And as we all know, Africans only offer grunt labor and get no lasting benefits at all, in terms of training e.t.c.
It’s not that our leaders can’t figure out the right thing to do, they just won’t do it. Some of you might not agree but our leaders are the last people we should have entrusted with our resources. A big mistake!
WHAT DO YOU THINK: Does Africa need China? Is Chinese Investment in Africa making our lunch or eating it?
